About Bigfoot Training....

Bigfoot Training Limited is owned and operated by Mike Johnston.

Since 1998 I have been the instructor responsible for training in Fire extinguisher operation, Standby Entry Duties, Standby Fire Duties (Firewatch), Radio Discipline and Fire Wardens on one of Europe's largest chemical complexes on Teesside. As a Scott-approved instructor I also carried out Breathing Apparatus training courses using the Scott Escape Sets, Scott Contour / Centurion SCBA sets, and Scott ModulAir Airline equipment.

As well as working on the Teesside sites, I have also carried out off-site training on behalf of various organisations including Nursing Homes, Public Houses, etc. During that period I trained over sixteen thousand people in Fire extinguisher operations alone, and covered almost forty one thousand training subjects.

Prior to becoming a Full-time Training Officer, I spent ten years on Teesside Chemical Sites, initially in Security, then as a Firefighter and eventually a Fire Officer.

Services Provided:

I have full knowledge of the training packages currently in use by the major chemical sites and businesses in the area, and was instrumental in the initial formatting of most of these packages.

Trainees will be validated to the required standards, with certification to confirm the trainee’s successful completion of the course.

  • Please remember that Fire awareness training is a legal requirement, and 100% compliance is required to maintain compliance with Health & Safety rules
  • All personnel attending any course should be deemed physically capable of doing so before arrival. This is particularly important for any trainees attending a breathing apparatus session due to the physical nature of the training.
  • Persons attending any course should be suitably dressed.

Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 (England & Wales)

Bigfoot Training offers businesses the chance to obtain training that meets the requirements of the Regulatory Reform Order.

Since October 2005, all premises, with the exception of private dwellings, MUST comply with the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 (England & Wales). Within this Order, businesses must provide the employees with clear and relevant information on the risks to them identified by the fire risk assessment, about the measures that have been taken to prevent fires, and how these measures will protect them if a fire breaks out. They must provide appropriate information, instruction and training to their employees, during their normal working hours, about fire precautions in the workplace, at the start of and periodically through their time of employment. The above order applies to virtually all premises and covers nearly every type of building, structure and open space. The only exceptions are private homes, including individual flats in a block or house.

Does your business conform to these rules?

If not, you could face a heavy fine, and could potentially be forced to cease trading. Fire training is no longer optional, it is a legal requirement.

Bigfoot Training is an affordable way to ensure your business complies with the rules. Fire training is done at your location. All we need is a facility big enough to comfortably seat your staff, and big enough to permit the instructor to demonstrate the equipment. If you require a hands-on session, then we will normally need an area outside for this.

Training usually consists of a classroom lecture with an optional written validation; this is then followed by the practical session. Successful trainees will be sent certification to ensure they have documented proof of compliance with the Regulatory Reform Order. The Company will also be sent a listing of all attendees for their employee training records, again to show compliance with the Order. Attendance records will be kept by Bigfoot Training for a minimum period of five years.

All courses will contain the necessary information to ensure compliance, but will be flexible enough to enable each business to include their own business-specific requirements. Please note: This may involve greater costs due to additional time or equipment required to complete the session.
